Judge Aileen Cannon has postponed the classified documents trial of former President Donald Trump in Florida indefinitely after problems with how the evidence has been handled led one of Trump's co-defendants to ask for a delay.

Special counsel Jack Smith tried to push Cannon to reschedule the trial for July 8, but she indicated in her order that she intended to resolve a backlog of issues that have piled up since the pretrial process began and would not set a new date until that was completed.

“[F]inalization of a trial date at this juncture — before resolution of the myriad and interconnected pre-trial and [classified evidence] issues … would be imprudent and inconsistent with the Court’s duty to fully and fairly consider the various pending pre-trial motions,” Cannon wrote in the five-page order.

It's still possible the trial could start before the election, but the prospects grow slimmer as the election gets closer.

Cannon's order indicated that she expects to resolve the pretrial issues by late July, but did not say whether the trial would be scheduled soon after that or not.
