Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar announces resignation after meeting with President Biden

 March 21, 2024

Just days after St. Patrick's Day, Ireland's politics was rocked by a bombshell resignation announcement.

According to the BBC, just days after a St. Patrick's Day visit to the United States with President Joe Biden, Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar announced that he would be stepping down from his position.

BBC noted:

Varadkar announced Wednesday he is resigning immediately as head of the governing Fine Gael party, which is part of a coalition government. That sets in motion a leadership race, akin to a primary in the U.S. system.

Varadkar didn't provide specifics as to the reason for his shocking and sudden announcement, other than to say that they were based on "political and personal" reasons.

"I am resigning as president and leader of Fine Gael effective today, and will resign as taoiseach as soon as my successor is able to take up that office," he said in a speech described as "emotional."

"It has been the most fulfilling time of my life," he added.

Notably, a number of people on social media described his resignation as a "win" for the people of Ireland. Varadkar was reportedly an extremely "woke" politician and attempted to push wildly unpopular woke ideologies on Irish voters.

"Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar has resigned. Another win for Ireland. Varadkar should step down as leader, too. The people are staring to push back against globalism and woke ideologies. Hold the line," one X user wrote.

The BBC's report shed additional light on his brand of politics:

A doctor whose father is originally from India and mother is Irish, Varadkar is Ireland's first biracial prime minister. He is also the first openly gay person to hold the top office in once-staunchly Roman Catholic Ireland. Varadkar campaigned to legalize same-sex marriage in 2015 and to legalize abortion in 2018.

His resignation was widely celebrated across social media.

"I smell some Irish luck in the air! Varadkar resigning? Can we make it a trend and have leaders stepping down left and right?" one X user wrote.

Another X user wrote, "I find this very encouraging. The globalists are overplaying their hand and hopefully this is the start of a reclamation process for the Irish people."

Not surprisingly, his party and sister coalitions that share the same ideologies have trailed far behind in the polls for the upcoming 2024 Ireland elections.
