'Heinous' violence grips West Bank amid ongoing Israeli-Hamas war

 April 14, 2024

The innumerable horrors unleashed since the Oct. 7 attacks on Israel have shocked the world, and it appears that the violence is showing no signs of slowing, something recently evidenced by the discovery of a missing teen's body.

A 14-year-old Israeli shepherd was found deceased in the West Bank, just one day after he was reported missing, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declaring his death the result of a “heinous murder,” as the BBC reports.

Shepherd goes missing

According to the outlet, it was on Friday morning that Benjamin Achimeir, the aforementioned teenager, had taken his sheep to graze from the area of Malachi Hashalom, an outpost near Ramallah.

The first sign of trouble was marked when nobody had reported seeing Achimier since he departed Gal Farm, and the flock returned later that day without him.

Achimier was highly familiar with the area in which he took the sheep to graze, according to his sister, making his disappearance all the more suspicious and alarming.

Tragic discovery

Sadly, the teen's body was ultimately found in the West Bank, killed in what Israeli officials said was a “terrorist attack,” as Politico noted.

During a search for Achimier, a Palestinian man was reportedly shot, and the discovery of the body and the events surrounding his disappearance have spurred an outbreak of troubling unrest.

Israeli settlers took their frustrations over the disappearance and death out on Palestinian villages over the weekend, despite calls from Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for them not to take justice into their own hands.

“Let the security forces act quickly in the hunt for the terrorists -- revenge actions will make it difficult for our fighters in their mission,” Gallant said.

Netanyahu was firm in his outrage over the incident, saying, “The heinous murder of the boy...is a serious crime” and noting that Israeli forces “are in an intensive pursuit after the heinous murderers and all those who collaborated with them.”

Escalation poses continued threat

As the BBC noted, settlers angry about the teenager's fate set cars alight while armed with guns and stones, actions that were met with stone-throwing Palestinian resistance.

Though “violent disturbances” were said to have erupted at numerous points, IDF forces were ultimately able to remove the settlers and disperse the danger.

International observers have warned about a surge in violence in the West Bank since the Oct. 7 attacks on Israel by Hamas, and this tragic incident seems only to have amplified the concern.

With the broader conflict between Israel and Hamas showing no signs of abating, it remains to be seen whether the more localized violence can be brought under control or will simply become part of the wider narrative of regional unrest.
