Ex-football star accidentally shoots mother, thinking she's an intruder

Ex-college football star Jalen Johnson shot and killed his mother Monica McNichols-Johnson, 56, on Thursday night at their home in Missouri when he mistook her for an intruder.

Johnson called 911 after realizing what he had done, and his girlfriend tried to help his mother, but she died anyway.

"He hasn't stopped crying," Johnson's attorney William Goldstein said.

Police charged Goldstein with manslaughter and armed criminal action and set his bail at $100,000.

Johnson kept a gun for protection because he had been robbed at gunpoint before.

Missouri's laws make it legal to use deadly force if someone believes they are in danger.
