Former President Donald Trump said Wednesday that it was "fantastic news for America" that Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) has decided not to run for re-election.

FANTASTIC NEWS FOR AMERICA, THE GREAT STATE OF UTAH, & FOR THE REPUBLICAN PARTY,” he posted on Truth Social on Wednesday.

“MITT ROMNEY, SOMETIMES REFERRED TO AS PIERRE DELECTO, WILL NOT BE SEEKING A SECOND TERM IN THE U.S. SENATE, WHERE HE DID NOT SERVE WITH DISTINCTION,” he added, referring to a secret social media account previously run by Romney.

Trump seemed to indicate that he planned to help primary Romney if he did run again.

Other major players who came out against Trump, such as former Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney, went on to lose their re-election bids. Cheney was also stripped of her leadership status in the House.

Romney called for a "new generation of leaders" and bashed both Trump and President Joe Biden.
