Senate Dems urge FCC to revisit bringing back 'net neutrality' regulations on internet providers

 September 27, 2023

President Joe Biden recently appointed a new commissioner to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), and moves are already being made.

According to Breitbart, just weeks after appointing a Democrat to the panel, which now consists of two Republicans and three Dems, 27 Senate Democrats have written a joint letter urging the return of Net neutrality.

Net neutrality is the marketing term for the general public that describes Title II common carrier regulations on internet service providers, once a highly controversial topic under the Obama administration.

Trump quashed the regulatory move when he became president. Net neutrality was only in place for roughly one year under Obama.

Anna Gomez was confirmed by the Senate last month to become the newest FCC commissioner, which happened after months of the Biden administration failing to confirm radical progressive Gigi Sohn to the position.

Breitbart noted:

Democrats in the Senate are now urging the FCC, with its new Democrat majority, to revive an old hobby-horse of the party: Title II regulations on internet service providers, a measure progressives call “net neutrality.” The letter’s signatories include Sens. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), Ron Wyden (D-OR), Cory Brooker (D-NJ), Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), and Mazie Hirono (D-HI) among others.

Democrats have ridiculously argued that net neutrality is crucial for a "free and open internet."

The senators' letter, in part, read:

"We write regarding the Federal Communication Commission’s (FCC’s) rightful authority over broadband internet access. Now that the FCC has a full slate of commissioners, we urge you to expeditiously reclassify broadband as a telecommunications service under Title II of the Communications Act."

It added, "Doing so will enable you to effectively protect consumers from harmful practices online, promote affordable access to the internet, enhance public safety, increase marketplace competition, and take other important steps to benefit our nation’s digital future."

According to The Daily Wire, the idea of bringing the regulatory move back was torched by Former chair of the Federal Communications Commission Ajit Pai, who called it an "utter waste of time."

"The FCC leadership’s decision to revisit so-called ‘net neutrality’ regulations is a complete and utter waste of time. Half a decade ago, we were promised that the end of the Internet was upon us, that broadband providers would block and throttle content, and that consumers would be harmed," Pai told the outlet.

It's truly a shame that while working-class Americans struggle under President Joe Biden's disastrous economic policies that they would spend even a minute in 2023 attempting to revive the most ridiculous internet regulatory policy in history.
