Pete McCloskey passes away at age 96

Pete McCloskey ultimately lost, but he was still brave enough to challenge President Richard Nixon for the Republican nomination in 1972.

He probably never expected his attempt at doing what he believed in would cost him so many friends.

Only one out of 1,348 delegates at the Miami convention that day voted for McCloskey.

Nobody gave a speech on his behalf.

McCloskey's main campaign point was his opposition to the war in Vietnam.

Other members of America's government didn't seem to agree with his anti-war approach.

"It’s always lonely at conventions like this," a tired McCloskey told reporters that day. "But then Patrick Henry was lonely when he talked about liberty."

McCloskey was a decorated Marine veteran who wanted American troops out of Vietnam.

Keeping with his lifelong theme of dissent against perceived injustices, McCloskey was the first congressman to push for Nixon's impeachment on the house floor.

Paul Norton McCloskey Junior (Pete) died at his home at the age of 96.
