'Monty Python' Star Eric Idle Says Working 'Not Easy At This Age'

 February 17, 2024

Monty Python star Eric Idle isn't retired, and he isn't sure why people keep thinking he is.

"I don’t know why people always assume we’re loaded," he said recently. "Python is a disaster. ‘Spamalot’ made money twenty years ago. I have to work for my living. Not easy at this age."

Idle is most famous for writing the screenplay for the 1975 hit Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

He is credited alongside other Monty Python comedy troupe members John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Graham Chapman, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin.

The same men stared in the film, and it is often considered one of the funniest movies ever made.

However, I guess the Monty Python boys aren't doing as well as you'd assume, considering that at least one seems to think he needs to keep working to support himself at age 80.

"We own everything we ever made in Python, and I never dreamed that at this age the income streams would tail off so disastrously," Idle said. "But I guess if you put a Gilliam child in as your manager you should not be so surprised. One Gilliam is bad enough. Two can take out any company."
