Mitch McConnell endorses Donald Trump after Super Tuesday victories

 March 7, 2024

To say former President Donald Trump is on a winning streak this week would be an understatement. From legal victories to a near-sweep of the Super Tuesday primary elections, he's on fire.

However, perhaps the most shocking victory came from what many would have believed to be an unlikely source -- Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

According to Fox News, the Senate Republican leader endorsed Trump in the wake of his victories on Super Tuesday and after Nikki Haley dropped out.

The endorsement shocked many, as Trump and McConnell haven't been on good terms for several years. Both men have had plenty of nasty exchanges.

On the heels of Trump banking more than 1000 delegates in this week's GOP primary elections, McConnell apparently finally realized that the bulk of the Republican Party wants Trump to be the person to take on President Joe Biden in November.

"It is abundantly clear that former President Trump has earned the requisite support of Republican voters to be our nominee for President of the United States. It should come as no surprise that as nominee, he will have my support," McConnell's statement read.

McConnell -- not exactly popular in MAGA circles -- slipped in some bragging points about how well he worked with Trump during his presidency.

"During his Presidency, we worked together to accomplish great things for the American people including tax reform that supercharged our economy and a generational change of our federal judiciary — most importantly, the Supreme Court," his statement said.

He added, "I look forward to the opportunity of switching from playing defense against the terrible policies the Biden administration has pursued to a sustained offense geared towards making a real difference in improving the lives of the American people."

Notably, McConnell was the most senior member of Senate Republicans who hadn't endorsed Trump before this week.

The Kentucky Republican's endorsement also came in the wake of his bombshell -- and largely appreciated -- announcement last week that he will step down from his powerful Senate leadership role in November.

"One of life’s most underappreciated talents is to know when it’s time to move on to life’s next chapter," McConnell said on the Senate floor. "So I stand before you today... to say that this will be my last term as Republican leader of the Senate."

Only time will tell if McConnell's endorsement helps Trump at all with non-MAGA voters.
