Candidates vying to be Donald Trump's running mate appear at Florida event

Former President Donald Trump put on a ritzy event in Palm Beach, Florida, this weekend, and candidates vying to be his running mate used the opportunity to court his attention.

A handful of contenders appeared at the event, including Sens. Marco Rubio (R-FL), J.D. Vance (R-OH), and Tim Scott (R-SC). Reps. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) and Byron Donalds (R-FL) are also fighting to gain Trump's favor.

Govs. Doug Burgum (R-ND) and Kristi Noem (R-SD) are also considered strong contenders. From senators to governors, there is a sizable and powerful group of people who want to be Trump's right-hand man.

Of these candidates, only Burgum is thought to be somewhat far down the list. He's a relative no-name who doesn't bring the energy or have the standing with Trump voters compared to someone like Donalds.

J.D. Vance is the most popular option for many at this stage and reportedly has the support of Donald Trump Jr., which could be decisive when Trump makes his final decision.

Whomever Trump picks will need to be loyal and defend the former president at all costs. Trump needs reliable people around him, and former VP Mike Pence demonstrated what happens if Trump doesn't choose wisely.
