Speaker Mike Johnson may be forced to back down on Ukraine funding

 March 17, 2024

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) is in major trouble and may be forced by the establishment wing of the GOP to reverse his stance on authorizing further aid to Ukraine.

On one hand, Johnson has the back of conservatives who oppose more Ukraine aid thanks to the staggering national debt. Johnson also wants to push through on the appropriations process to finally secure a long-term funding deal for the government.

On the other hand, Johnson is facing pressure from Democrats and establishment Republicans who want to pour more billions that the United States doesn't have into Ukraine.

The Senate passed a massive $96 billion aid bill earlier this month and Johnson signaled that he is open to bringing it up for a vote during a Republican unity retreat.

Should Johnson reverse his stance on Ukraine and bring the bill up for a vote, it will likely doom his already tenuous standing among conservatives.

Many hoped that Johnson would bring actual change and wield power against the Democrat Party, but he seems to be no stronger than his predecessor.
