Michelle Obama rules out 2024 presidential run

 March 6, 2024

Many have speculated that former first lady Michelle Obama could be a viable and strategic replacement for President Joe Biden as the 2024 Democratic nominee.

That's mostly due to the fact that the Obama name carries significant weight among Democrats, and President Biden's polling numbers are looking worse by the day.

According to the New York Post, Michelle Obama finally reacted to the growing buzz around the possibility that she would jump into the race somehow.

Her answer will likely disappoint many who believe that she's the party's only chance at beating former President Donald Trump.

Obama, on Tuesday, through her office, revealed that she will not be seeking a White House run in 2024, closing the door on any possibility.

"As former first lady Michelle Obama has expressed several times over the years, she will not be running for president," said communications director Crystal Carson to NBC News.

She added, "Mrs. Obama supports President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris’ re-election campaign."

The Post noted:

Michelle Obama has previously, repeatedly ruled out a presidential bid. “Politics is hard,” she told Oprah Winfrey during her Netflix special “The Light We Carry” last year.

“You’ve got to want it. It’s got to be in your soul because it is so important. It is not in my soul.”

However, and there's always a however, Fox News host Jesse Watters suggested that the wording in her statement was strategic, in that she wouldn't "run" for the presidency.

Watters pointed out that she said nothing about turning down being drafted at the convention should 81-year-old President Biden decide to bow out on his own or because of his health. The DNC would then have the sole power to pick the party's nominee.

And as others have suggested, the DNC could pick Michelle Obama, given that she's a Black female, and leapfrog Vice President Kamala Harris both on the gender and diversity front with zero repercussions.

Harris, if she was even a halfway effective and popular vice president, would be the presumptive nominee should Biden get out, but given that she polls worse than her boss, many in the party have indicated that she's simply not a viable option.

Only time will tell if Michelle Obama's mind changes. It could be all in the details.
