Ex-Trump aide Peter Navarro making last ditch bid to overturn his prison sentence

 March 17, 2024

Former Trump White House trade adviser Peter Navarro is asking the Supreme Court to intervene on his behalf to save him from a prison sentence.

Navarro is facing a four-month sentence for defying a subpoena from the Jan. 6 select committee but he wants the Supreme Court to rule on if he should get to stay out of prison while he appeals the sentence.

Navarro's lawyers filed the motion with Chief Justice John Roberts, who oversees appeals from the D.C. Circuit, on Friday. Roberts will then refer the appeal to his fellow justices who will decide on whether to take the case.

Navarro was convicted of two misdemeanor counts of contempt of Congress for refusing to provide documents or testimony to the Jan. 6 panel. He defended his resistance to the subpoena by citing his executive privilege.

Navarro attorneys Stan Brand and Stanley Woodward wrote in the filing to SCOTUS, "The prosecution of a senior presidential advisor asserting executive privilege conflicts with the constitutional independence required by the doctrine of separation of powers."

Navarro is undoubtedly the victim of a politicized justice system and the Supreme Court has a golden opportunity to step in and rebuff the leftists who are trying to take revenge on former President Donald Trump by attacking his allies.
