El Salvadorian President Nayib Bukele fires back at Rep. Ilhan Omar

 February 6, 2024

Progressive "Squad" Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) was embarrassed on an international level this week.

According to the Daily Mail, President Nayib Bukele, who won reelection in El Salvador, took several shots at Omar.

His remarks came in the wake of Omar's warning that Bukele's leadership style would threaten "democratic values," which caused an immediate backlash from both sides of the political aisle.

Bukele is known for his success in cracking down on his country's rampant violent crime issue, having locked up nearly 1% of its population so far.

The Mail noted:

The Central American leader, 42, has spent his time in power cleaning up crime in his country and ensuring that the famously high murder rate plummeted by locking up tens of thousands of violent gang members.

At the end of January, Omar attacked the leader in an X post, spewing her typical progressive drivel.

"I led Members of Congress in sending a letter to @SecBlinken urging action on threats to democracy in El Salvador. The State Dept must review its relationship with El Salvador and defend democratic values. The Salvadoran people deserve free and fair elections without fear of repression," the congresswoman wrote.

Bukele snapped back in an X reply, thanking her for not supporting his campaign.

Social media users reacted to the international spat, with many praising Bukele for his success in tamping down on the country's violent crime epidemic. Others reminded Omar that El Salvador is entitled to run its own government.

"We need more Presidents like @nayibbukele in the world. @Ilhan doesn’t represent America. She has no love or respect for our country," Mayra Flores Vallejo wrote on X.

Another X user wrote, "I think it’s past time for the US government to stay out of the affairs of Central America."

Christina Pushaw added, "It’s up to the people of El Salvador what kind of government they want. You should stay out of it. Seems they mostly approve of their current president because he put criminals in prison and most people don’t want to live in a hellscape run by brutal gangs."

Clearly, Bukele isn't worried about what a progressive U.S. lawmaker has to say and isn't scared to offer his retort.
