Donald Trump demands national reciprocity for 2nd Amendment

Former President Donald Trump promised during the NRA’s Leadership Forum on Friday that he would demand Congress send a bill of national reciprocity for American's 2nd Amendment rights.

During his speech, Trump promised, "I will ask Congress to send a bill to my desk…[for] national concealed carry reciprocity. Just like your driver’s license or your marriage license, your Second Amendment must apply across state lines. It will. We’ll get it done pretty quickly, too."

Trump has been pushing for reciprocity since his 2016 presidential campaign.

In a paper arguing for reciprocity, Trump wrote, "The right of self-defense doesn’t stop at the end of your driveway. That’s why I have a concealed carry permit and why tens of millions of Americans do too. That permit should be valid in all 50 states. A driver’s license works in every state, so it’s common sense that a concealed carry permit should work in every state. If we can do that for driving — which is a privilege, not a right — then surely we can do that for concealed carry, which is a right, not a privilege."

Of course, Trump had to rely on Congress to get the bill to his desk, and that unfortunately failed. However, Republicans now control the House and just need a few seats to take the Senate in next year's election cycle.

If Trump can win the election, and Republicans do their jobs, our 2nd Amendment rights will be stronger than ever.
