Democrats trying to bargain saving Speaker Johnson for Ukraine aid

House Democrats are becoming increasingly serious about trying to trade votes to save Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) for an aid package for Ukraine, Israel, Taiwan, and humanitarian aid to Gaza.

Republicans have opposed the aid package because they have demanded that it be tied to legislation to secure the U.S. southern border with Mexico.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) filed a motion to vacate Johnson's leadership after he worked with Democrats to pass a last-minute spending package that funded the government through September 30 and avoided a government shutdown.

Greene said the measure was more a warning than a plan to actually do anything about it at this point, so Johnson is probably safer not trying to pass the aid package, which Greene said would definitely trigger a vote to oust him.

It's a nice try by Democrats to create a win-win situation.

They don't yet have the blessing of Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), who may just want to take his chances that he could be speaker if Johnson goes down in flames and Republicans can't hold their slim majority together.
