The youngest mayor of Ecuador was assassinated in a rented car in Munabi over the weekend along with a staffer, shot dead as part of an apparent political killing spree.

Mayor of San Vincente, Brigitte Garcia, 27, and her communications director, Jairo Loor were found inside the rented car on Sunday morning, and appear to have been shot dead from inside the car.

Presidential candidate Luisa Gonzalez said of the killings on social media, "I've just found out they've assassinated our fellow mayor of San Vicente Brigitte Garcia.I have no words, in shock, nobody is safe in Ecuador NOBODY."

Back in August, presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio was killed by gunshots while leaving a rally just two weeks before the election.

Another mayor, Agustin Intriago of Manta was shot dead in July while touring the city.

Ecuadorian president Daniel Noboa condemned the murders and said his government was working with authorities to investigate and arrest the person or persons responsible for Garcia and Loor's killings. Ecuador is already under a state of emergency that was extended on March 7.
