During his weekly appearance on The Daily Show, Jon Stewart blasted Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) for telling reporters that members of Congress and their spouses should be allowed to trade stocks like everyone else.

"This is a free market, and people -- we're a free market economy. They should be able to participate in that,” she said in a video clip Stewart played.

"Here’s the thing," Stewart said. "In a free market, everyone has access to the same information. So unless you’re going to put all of us on the committees, I don’t get it." Pelosi and her husband made a 65% return on their stock trading in 2023 alone, more than double the average return of 24%.

Stewart also decried the fact that Congress is regulating itself in this matter and has refused to even bring legislation that would ban members of Congress from trading stocks to a vote.

While the clip Stewart played is from 2021 when she was Speaker, and Pelosi now claims to support the bill in question that would ban her and her husband from continuing to make millions from their investments, she still has seemed quite complacent to let it languish in committee.

Stewart also mocked Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ) who is on trial for taking bribes from foreign businesses and governments, saying he didn’t “need to break the law so cartoonishly when the legal corruption in the Senate is so f——— lucrative.”
