Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene seeks Fani Willis' disbarment

 March 22, 2024

Though a judge recently ruled that Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis could remain involved in the election interference case against former President Donald Trump, that may not be the end of her legal or professional troubles.

As Newsweek reports, Georgia Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has just filed a complaint with the State Bar of Georgia requesting that the embattled prosecutor be disbarred due to her highly questionable relationship with now-former special prosecutor Nathan Wade.

Greene took to social media to explain the move, stating that she hoped to see Willis disbarred “for her corrupt actions.”

Elaborating on the reasons she believes Willis must lose her license to practice law, Greene wrote that she “should've been removed from her political persecution of President Trump after it was revealed she went on lavish vacations with her lover Nathan Wade.”

Referencing Wade, Greene added, “The lover she paid HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS of dollars! Unfit to serve!”

In terms of process, Greene formally asked the State Bar of Georgia to initiate proceedings that would facilitate “an investigation of Fani Willis, her suspension, and her disbarment.”

The move comes in the wake of a decision from Fulton County Judge Scott McAfee in which Willis was not disqualified from continued participation in the case against Trump, provided Wade stepped down from the matter.

Greene took issue with that finding, but also with the fact that McAfee did not make a formal finding that Willis gave false testimony in court about the timeline and precise nature of her relationship with Wade.

As Newsweek notes, anyone may file a complaint with the State Bar of Georgia about a lawyer practicing within its area of jurisdiction.

However, the public may not immediately be informed whether the professional disciplinary body proceeds to a full investigation or dismisses the complaint altogether.

Any public discipline to which Willis may eventually be subject would be under the purview of the state Supreme Court.

Willis is also the subject of an investigation request from the American Accountability Foundation (AAF), which asked the state bar to probe what it contends is the prosecutor's admission of retaining campaign funds for personal use.

Notably, Willis is not the only party to be subjected to such a request for potential professional discipline stemming from the romantic entanglement that captured the nation's rapt attention, as Fox News reports.

In addition to Willis, the AAF also requested that the state bar launch investigatory and/or disciplinary action against Wade over his involvement with Willis, contending that he committed perjury in a hearing on the prosecutor's potential disqualification, but whether either are in real jeopardy of losing their licenses, only time will tell.
