California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) announced Monday that EMILY's List President Laphonza Butler was his pick to fill the Senate seat vacated by Dianne Feinstein after she died on Friday.

Butler will be the third black woman to serve in the Senate as well as the first openly LGBT female to serve from California.

Newsom was able to check so many intersectional boxes with his choice that no one but Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA) will dare to criticize him for it.

Lee was hoping she would be the Black woman to be appointed, since she is already running for the seat.

But Newsom said he didn't want to "interfere" with the race because it wouldn't be fair, which is code for saying that he doesn't like Lee.

EMILY's List works to help Democrat women who support abortion rights win election to office.
