New details emerge about Tom Cruise's long-ago divorce from Mimi Rogers

 April 21, 2024

The life of actor Tom Cruise has long been a subject of fascination for fans and casual observers alike, and there are now new insights available into his first marriage.

As the Inquisitr explains, the Top Gun star's split from first wife Mimi Rogers was not just one marked by personal rancor, but it also cost him a pretty penny.

Cruise and Rogers met in 1985 and soon became one of Hollywood's most-watched couples.

Though they married in 1987, things had soured by 1989, and separation and divorce would soon follow.

Just prior to the initiation of their marital dissolution, Cruise pulled in what had been his largest paycheck to date, namely, a $2 million haul for his appearance in Top Gun.

However, according to Nicki Swift, Cruise lost a staggering $4 million in the process of divorcing Rogers.

Though Rogers was said to have introduced Cruise to Scientology, something to which he has since been committed for decades, reporting from Vanity Fair has suggested that she -- as did his second wife, Nicole Kidman and likely his third wife, Katie Holmes -- eventually sought distance from the influence of church leader David Miscavige, who was said to have been “integral to the breakup of the marriages.”

As much of a financial hit the divorce from Rogers likely was at the time, it was not long after their parting that Cruise began to earn far greater sums for appearances in films such as Days of Thunder the Mission: Impossible franchise, and more.

The actor's net worth these days is estimated to exceed $600 million, and as such, he has surely long forgotten the $4 million it cost him to leave his first ill-fated marriage.

Cruise's personal life has been back in the news recently for another, unrelated reason, namely, the milestone 18th birthday of his estranged daughter, Suri, as the Daily Mail reports.

According to the outlet, Suri and Tom Cruise have been effective strangers from one another for many years, ever since the actor's split from Holmes, who is mother to Suri.

Other than paying an estimated $400,000 annually in child support -- which ends now that Suri is 18 -- Tom Cruise has had no contact with his child, and that is a situation she is reportedly content to see continue.

One insider told the Mail, “Suri will not have any contact with her father, despite being 18, and even if he called, she would not answer.”

“He does not exist to Katie or Suri, and his daughter does not want to rely on him for anything,” the source went on, painting a sad, but understandable picture of a young woman who was deprived of a meaningful relationship with her father throughout her formative years, something for which many believe his dedication to the cult of Scientology is to blame.
