The number of Senate seats Republicans need to flip to gain the majority in 2024 may have just gone up by one.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) said Sunday during a CNN interview that she is considering leaving the Republican party because of former President Donald Trump's control over it.

"I certainly can't get behind Donald Trump," she said, adding, ""Oh, I think I'm very independent-minded."

She didn't directly say she would leave the party. No Republican senators have changed to independent in recent years, only Democrat ones.

"I am navigating my way through some very interesting political times, so let's just leave it at that," she said.

Murkowski endorsed Nikki Haley for the GOP presidential nomination and said she "absolutely" wouldn't vote for Trump.
