33-year-old Matthew J. Ornellas Jr. managed to escape jail in Hawaii by scaling a razor-wire fence only to be hit by a car 300 feet down the road in a hit-and-run that left him seriously injured.

Ornellas Jr. was being held at the Kauai Community Correctional Center on a drug charge when he managed to escape and ended up running into oncoming traffic on Kuhio Highway.

He was then hit by a driver who fled the scene after making a U-turn according to a report from police.

He was hospitalized and in serious condition and police are still looking for the driver of the vehicle.

Ornellas Jr. was being held under minimum security and his escape was also likely aided by the facility's outdated security.

A report on Hawaii's detention facilities described them as “aging and inefficiently constructed correctional facilities” leading to an “inability to remedy chronic safety or security concerns.”
