Congress was beyond shocked to learn that a lawmaker's brother was killed in a shooting earlier this week.

According to The Hill, Timothy Kildee, the brother of Rep. Dan Kildee (D-MI), was killed in a Tuesday morning shooting, local law enforcement confirmed.

Notably, the suspect in the case is Timothy Kildee's 27-year-old son. The fatal shooting reportedly occurred during a "string of crimes" in the early morning hours of that day, according to Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson.

The Hill noted:

The sheriff’s office was called before 3 a.m. on Tuesday due to an incident in Burton. The suspect engaged in a verbal confrontation, according to Swanson. A firearm was presented, Swanson noted. The suspect left the house and reached out to his birth mother. The suspect, who was on foot, was picked up by her sometime between the initial incident and 5 a.m.

The man's birth mother reportedly took the suspect to his father's house. On the way, the suspect reportedly jumped out of the vehicle while it was moving. The mother and father, Timothy Kildee, "connected" to locate their son.

Another son who was in the basement of the house ultimately heard the suspect, presumably his brother, shout, "Give me your wallet and your keys." That brother also heard a struggle take place between the father and son, before eventually hearing a shot fired.

According to Sheriff Swanson, that was the shot that killed Timothy Kildee.

"There was some type of breakdown and or other entanglements that caused him to be so violent," Swanson added.

The situation didn't end after the fatal shooting, police noted. After the shot was fired, the suspect then stole his father's truck and ultimately crashed it as he was traveling at a high rate of speed.

Rep. Kildee released a statement on the unfortunate tragedy that took his brother's life.

"Our family is grieving and heartbroken. There are no words to describe the loss of a beloved brother and family member, especially in such a terrible tragedy,” Rep. Kildee said in a Tuesday statement. "I thank the community for honoring my family’s privacy during this very difficult time."

Sheriff Swanson added, "We’re going to continue bringing not only answers to questions but comfort to the family."

Prosecutors are currently considering charges.
