Breyer Signals Support For Supreme Court Age And Term Limits

 March 25, 2024

During an interview on Sunday's Meet the Press, former Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer announced that he would support age and term limits for America's highest court.

"I don't think that's harmful," Breyer said when asked by Kristen Welker, although he added that the court's justices could still serve "long terms."

"Why long? Because I don't think you want someone who's appointed to the Supreme Court to be thinking about his next job," Breyer added. "And so, a 20-year term? I don't know, 18? Long term? Fine. Fine."

He thinks that it could be beneficial because it would eliminate the gamesmanship in deciding when justices should retire or be appointed.

"You've been there for quite a while, and other people also should have a chance at these jobs. And at some point, you're just not going to be able to do it," Breyer said.

He knows that's the truth because he went through it himself as the court's oldest justice before his retirement in 2022.

He was replaced by Ketanji Brown Jackson.
