Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) have teamed up to introduce the "Green New Deal for Housing" bill to remove an obstacle to building new affordable housing at a time when Ocasio-Cortez said housing cost increases have made it impossible for many Americans to afford housing on their own.

"For a long time, we could pass a tax incentive here or there and say, ‘Hey, we've got a great housing policy,’" Ocasio-Cortez told Politico. "And everyday people … were supportive because there was still that dream and that idea that ‘I'm going to be buying a home soon … that's within the horizon for me.’ Right now, we have an entire generation — that is ascending into becoming the most powerful electorate, the largest electorate — for which that is decades away."

Repealing the Faircloth Amendment is the bill's main focus. Doing so would allow HUD to fund new public housing, which has been prohibited for decades.

Along with doing so, however, the bill adds all kinds of "green" requirements, and the price tag is up to $234 billion in order to fund these green initiatives.

The bill aims to make all public housing into zero-carbon housing, but it is such a lofty goal that it is unlikely to pass either chamber.

Among other provisions, it bans gas stoves, which Republicans have said is a non-starter.
