Top Senate Republicans poised to endorse Trump
Former President Donald Trump may soon have endorsements from the top two Republicans in the Senate.
Senate Minority Whip John Thune (R-SD) endorsed him over the weekend after he won the South Carolina primary over one of the state's own, former Gov. Nikki Haley.
Thune is considered a potential successor to Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), who also is also reportedly considering a Trump endorsement.
McConnell has been critical of Trump since Jan. 6, 2021, so his endorsement would be a big one for the former president.
Representatives from the two camps have had recent meetings about a thaw between them, particularly since the last big obstacle to Trump's nomination has been cleared.
A source close to the discussion said that Republicans opposed to Trump are realizing that it's more important to beat President Joe Biden than to maintain their hostility.
