Newsom’s call came on Thursday following a fatal shooting by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in Minneapolis on Wednesday, where 37-year-old Renee Nicole Macklin Good was killed while attempting to drive away, and a separate incident in Portland, Oregon, on Thursday, where two individuals were hospitalized after being shot by Border Patrol agents.

The Minneapolis incident has sparked protests across the city and beyond, while hundreds gathered outside an ICE building in Portland late Thursday night to demonstrate against the escalating tensions over federal immigration enforcement under the Trump administration, as The Hill reports.

Protests Erupt Over Federal Enforcement Tactics

Critics argue that these shootings highlight a dangerous overreach by federal authorities, with many pointing fingers at Noem’s leadership and the broader policies of the current administration.

Newsom’s press office didn’t hold back, posting on X, “Kristi Noem should resign – before more Americans are killed. She needs to be held to account.”

Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin also chimed in on X, stating, “A woman in Minnesota was shot and killed by ICE today. We all saw the video, and the Trump administration is lying about it.” Accusations of deceit are easy to throw around, but this feels more like political theater than a search for truth.

Noem’s Controversial Label Sparks Backlash

Noem, for her part, doubled down by labeling Macklin Good a domestic terrorist on Thursday, claiming she was part of a mob harassing ICE officers by blocking and shouting at them during their operations.

Thom Tillis of North Carolina, have raised eyebrows at Noem’s rush to judgment while the Minneapolis scene was still under review. Jumping the gun on such a sensitive case doesn’t exactly inspire confidence in steady leadership.

Tillis himself noted on Thursday that it’s unusual for a senior official to conclude so quickly, suggesting a more measured approach would acknowledge the profound loss of life and the ongoing investigation.

The fallout has been swift, with a growing number of Democrats pushing for Noem’s impeachment, though they lack Republican support to make it a realistic threat in Congress.

Rep. Robin Kelly of Illinois is even preparing articles of impeachment against Noem, citing obstruction of Congress, violation of public trust, and self-dealing as grounds for action.
