Maine Democrat Senate candidate Platner refuses to apologize for mocking wounded Purple Heart recipient

 May 26, 2026

A Fox News reporter confronted Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner outside a market near his home and asked whether he regretted an online post savaging a Purple Heart recipient who was shot four times fighting the Taliban. Platner declined to apologize. He pointed to his own service record instead.

The exchange, captured on video, centers on a June 2019 Reddit post in which Platner, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who says he completed four infantry tours, wrote about Pfc. Ted Daniels, an Army soldier wounded during a 2012 firefight in Afghanistan. The post did not read like a policy disagreement or a tactical critique. It read like contempt.

In the post, Platner wrote: "Dumb motherf***** didn't deserve to live. At least his stupidity and fat a** wheezing are available for all future infantrymen to witness and hold in contempt. Poor marksmanship on the Taliban's part is the only reason this mouthbreather made it home, he managed to make every possible s*** decision possible when it comes to small unit combat." The comment referred to video footage of Daniels under fire from Taliban fighters, an engagement that left Daniels with four gunshot wounds and earned him the Purple Heart.

That is the post Platner will not apologize for.

Platner's defense: his own service

When the Fox News reporter pressed him, Platner responded by invoking his military credentials rather than addressing the substance of what he wrote.

"I did four tours in the infantry, any attempt to say that I disrespect veterans is slanderous and offensive."

He continued:

"Do you know how many of my friends have Purple Hearts, do you know how many of my friends got wounded? Yeah, a lot of them, thank you."

Neither answer addressed the specific language he used about Daniels, language that wished a fellow servicemember had not survived combat. Platner has previously cited PTSD as context for his past online posts, though the timeline of his diagnosis relative to the June 2019 Reddit comment remains unclear.

A pattern, not an isolated post

The Daniels post was not a one-off. The Washington Free Beacon documented a broader pattern of deleted Reddit posts by Platner, written under the username "P-Hustle" between 2013 and 2021. In a March 2019 post, Platner described Army soldiers as "full of fat, lazy trash who would rather not be in uniform." The account was deleted in August 2025, before Platner launched his Senate campaign against Republican Sen. Susan Collins.

That timing raises its own questions. A candidate who believed his old posts were defensible would have no reason to scrub them. A candidate who recognized they were indefensible might have started with an apology rather than a delete key.

As we have previously reported, archived Reddit posts reveal a range of crude admissions by Platner that paint a fuller picture of the candidate's online conduct before he sought public office.

Fetterman sounds the alarm from within the party

The most striking criticism of Platner has not come from Republicans. It has come from a fellow Democrat. Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, in a May 2 statement, offered a blunt assessment of Platner's candidacy and what it says about the direction of the Maine Democratic Party.

Fox News reported that Fetterman characterized the situation in stark terms:

"There is kind of a small Communist takeover in Maine. Platner, he's already announced that he's an avowed Communist. He's made that statement, and he put that online. Now, he's going to be the Democratic nominee. So there is a [resurgence of] socialism, and that's become more and more a part of it. And now there's more, it's like a marriage of the Palestinian, the anti-ICE, the abolish ICE, and now turning it into like an orgy of socialism here, and that's sad. Because it's supposed to be about labor, like unions. I am absolutely a proud pro-union Democrat, but the kinds of mess that are you see showing up in many of them, that is the worst impulses that our party continues, we just [can't seem to] resist those things."

Fetterman's language is notable for its specificity. He did not describe Platner as merely progressive or left-leaning. He used the word "Communist" and attributed it to Platner's own public statements. Whether Platner has in fact described himself that way in his own words, beyond Fetterman's characterization, remains an open question in the available reporting.

Endorsed by Sanders and Warren

Despite the controversy, Platner has secured endorsements from two of the Democratic Party's most prominent progressive figures: Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts. Those endorsements carry weight in a primary and signal that the national progressive establishment views Platner as its preferred candidate in the Maine Senate race.

The Sanders and Warren endorsements also frame a choice for Democratic primary voters. They can back a candidate whose deleted social media history includes mocking a soldier who nearly died in combat, or they can ask whether someone who wrote those words, and still won't retract them, belongs anywhere near the United States Senate.

What Platner owes and what voters deserve

Military service is honorable. Four infantry tours represent genuine sacrifice. But service does not grant a permanent license to degrade other veterans, especially one who took four rounds from the Taliban and lived to carry the scars.

Platner's Reddit post did not critique Daniels' tactics in measured, professional terms. It called a wounded soldier a "mouthbreather," said he "didn't deserve to live," and credited Taliban marksmanship failures, not Daniels' courage, for his survival. That is not a veterans' policy disagreement. That is venom directed at a man who bled for his country.

When confronted on camera, Platner had every opportunity to say the simplest thing a candidate can say: "I was wrong, and I'm sorry." He chose not to. He chose deflection. He chose to make the story about himself.

The deleted Reddit account tells voters that Platner knew the posts were a problem. The refusal to apologize tells them he still doesn't think he owes anyone an explanation. And the endorsements from Sanders and Warren tell them that the national progressive apparatus either doesn't care or didn't bother to look.

Voters in Maine will decide whether any of that matters. But Pfc. Ted Daniels, who was shot four times defending his country, deserved better than what Graham Platner wrote, and he certainly deserves better than the non-apology he got on camera.

A man who won't say sorry for mocking a wounded soldier's right to live is telling you exactly who he is. Believe him.
