Jack Smith Made Last-Ditch Effort To Persuade SCOTUS To Take Trump Immunity Appeal

 December 23, 2023

Special Counsel Jack Smith did all he could to convince the U.S. Supreme Court to see things his way.

After Donald Trump's legal team filed its response to Smith's request for expedited review of the former president's immunity claim in his election interference case, the special counsel attempted to get in the last word.

In the end, it didn't matter.

Smith demanded that the Supreme Court not allow Trump's Jan. 6 case to follow normal processes and instead make a ruling on Trump's immunity claim without the issue going before the federal appeals court.

The goal for Jack Smith was clear.

He was not trying to pursue justice, he was simply trying to do whatever it took to make sure that Trump is too busy in the first half of 2024 to put the appropriate amount of energy toward the presidential election.

"This Court's immediate review of that question is the only way to achieve its timely and definitive resolution," Smith wrote when begging the Supreme Court to help him take down Trump.

"The public interest in a prompt resolution of this case favors an immediate, definitive decision by this Court," Smith continued. "The charges here are of the utmost gravity. This case involves — for the first time in our Nation's history — criminal charges against a former President based on his actions while in office."

However, on Friday, the high court declined to grant Smith's wish.
