Hunter Biden teases 2028 run while following Trump into political crypto
Hunter Biden has teased a 2028 White House run while launching $LAPTOP, following Donald Trump into political crypto even as he attacks Trump’s record on money and inequality.
Hunter Biden said he might consider running for president if radio host John Catsimatidis endorsed him. He made the comment during an appearance on The Cats Roundtable, but stopped short of announcing a campaign.
The remark puts another Biden name into early 2028 speculation. It also comes as Hunter Biden promotes a meme coin tied to the laptop controversy from the 2020 election cycle.
Newsweek reported that Biden said he “may have to” consider a run if Catsimatidis backed him. The host is a conservative donor and Trump ally, a detail that made the exchange sound less like a formal political declaration.
The Washington Examiner described the remark as likely a joke. It also reported that Biden had dismissed the idea of seeking the presidency only weeks earlier.
Biden offers Catsimatidis a condition, not a campaign
The clearest version of Biden’s answer came when Catsimatidis raised the possibility of supporting him. “If I get your endorsement, I may have to [run for president],” Biden said.
That is a long way from filing paperwork, building a campaign or making a firm pledge. Biden instead praised the Democratic field and singled out Gavin Newsom as one of the party’s possible contenders.
The New York Post reported that Biden identified addiction recovery and the rule of law as issues he would stress. He said addiction affects roughly 50 million Americans.
Biden also said, “I want the next president to commit to one thing: to adhering to the rule of law.” That standard is worth stating plainly. Any candidate seeking the presidency should expect voters to examine his own record against it.
Hunter Biden argued that Democrats already have a strong group of possible candidates. Newsom, Sen. Jon Ossoff, Kamala Harris, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Pete Buttigieg were among the names identified in the early field.
$LAPTOP turns a political controversy into a crypto brand
The possible presidential bid is only half the political branding. Hunter Biden is also launching $LAPTOP, a meme coin on Coinbase’s Base network.
The project plans to issue 1 billion coins. Twenty percent of the supply is earmarked for people who lost money on Trump’s TRUMP coin, while as much as 30% could be destroyed under specified political or market conditions.
The precise conditions for those token “burns,” the crypto term for permanently removing coins from circulation, were not stated. Nor was a launch date or Hunter Biden’s formal role in the project disclosed.
That leaves basic questions unanswered. A political name and a provocative symbol can draw attention, but buyers still need clear terms, firm dates and accountable leadership.
The contrast with Biden’s rhetoric is direct. He accused Trump of becoming “much more interested in filling his own bank account than the bank accounts of normal Americans,” yet Biden is attaching his own political identity to a new digital token.
Democrats already face a crowded 2028 field
Hunter Biden also tried to place himself near the party’s center-left governors. He said some were “running their states incredibly well, from the center left,” while arguing that part of the party “isn’t part of the same party.”
Catsimatidis was more blunt about candidates backed by the Democratic Socialists of America, describing them as people who “hate America.” That was the host’s characterization, not an established fact about every DSA-backed candidate.
Newsom has already acknowledged interest in a future White House bid. He said he would be “lying” if he denied considering one after the 2026 midterm elections.
An August Emerson College survey published with The Hill placed Newsom slightly ahead of potential Republican nominees J.D. Vance and Marco Rubio. Ocasio-Cortez trailed both Republicans in the same survey.
Hunter Biden has not joined that contest. For now, he has offered a conditional quip, a list of policy concerns and a meme coin built around one of his family’s most famous controversies.
Public office demands more than a famous name and a marketable grievance. Voters deserve clear commitments, lawful conduct and full accountability.
