House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) said Monday that the House would not vote on a standalone foreign aid package that the Senate passed on Tuesday because the measure ignored the border, which is a more immediate need for Americans.

“House Republicans were crystal clear from the very beginning of discussions that any so-called national security supplemental legislation must recognize that national security begins at our own border,” Johnson said on X.

“The House acted ten months ago to help enact transformative policy change by passing the Secure Our Border Act, and since then, including today, the Senate has failed to meet the moment," he added.

He said that the Senate was right to reject a combined border and immigration bill that would not really solve the problem of illegal immigration.

A number of Republicans, including Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), have been pushing very hard to get more aid for Ukraine, which seems necessary if they are going to continue to fight against Russia's much greater power.

But Democrats were not willing to do anything effective on the border, so now they must reap the consequences of their position.
