Tragedy struck a family during what should have been one of the happiest moments of a couple's lives.

According to the New York Post, a beloved Australian police officer’s engagement party turned into a horrific nightmare after he died during a freak accident.

At an engagement party thrown at his Western Australia home, Senior Constable Liam Trimmer died in front of his fiancé after taking a nasty fall during which he fatally cut his neck.

Trimmer, 29, couldn't be saved after the freak accident, with police saying that "everything was done" in desperate efforts to save him from dying, according to WA Police Commissioner Col Blanch.

"Everything was done to try and save him but it wasn’t to be and I know everyone that was involved are really, really hurting. I think they wish they could just wake up from this nightmare," Blanch said in a statement.

"This extraordinary officer loved helping the community, was a fine example of WA policing and it’s such a tragedy," Blanch added. "A very, very confident, capable young man with his whole life ahead of him, and that’s how sad this is."

The Post noted:

Trimmer, who was originally from the UK, moved to Australia about 10 years ago and graduated from the Joondalup Police Academy in 2013, 9NEWS reported.

He moved to Australia in 2017 to the outback mining town of Kalgoorlie, where he would join the local police force -- specifically the Gang Crime Squad -- as well as the local rugby team.

The Western Australia Police Union issued a heartfelt statement regarding Trimmer's passing.

"We are deeply saddened by the passing of a valued member of the blue family. A dedicated Police Officer sadly passed away in an off-duty accident over the weekend. The WA Police Union sends heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the fallen officer during this difficult period," the statement read.

Social media users reacted to the shocking and horrific story, with many offering their condolences to Trimmer's family and especially his soon-to-be bride.

"How incredibly sad. Condolences to his family, his fiancé, fellow colleagues, and members of the community he served. May he Rest In Peace," one X user wrote.

Fundraising efforts were launched to help his fiancé through such an exceedingly difficult time.
