A new poll from Echelon Insight found that Vivek Ramaswamy has jumped past Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to take second place in the race for the Republican presidential nomination.
While former President Donald Trump is still boasting a seemingly insurmountable 40-point lead, there is a tight race for the runner-up position behind him.
DeSantis has been the definite number-two candidate for most of the race, but now Ramaswamy is changing the game and has gone from an irrelevant candidate to second place in a matter of months.
Republican Main Street Partnership president and CEO Sarah Chamberlain explained, "While Donald Trump remains the frontrunner, Republican voters seeking an alternative candidate are beginning to coalesce around a few top-tier choices. For much of the past year that was Gov. DeSantis, but Vivek Ramaswamy has risen well above expectations and is currently leading the pack of challengers. Voters are clearly hungry for something new – no group more than the suburban women who often decide elections."
This is terrible news for DeSantis who has spent the past few months trying to compete with Trump only to find himself falling to other Republicans.
While there is still a lot of race left to go, it is beginning to look like DeSantis is doomed. On the other hand, it seems Ramaswamy isn't a gimmick candidate and could pull real support in the coming months.
