Victor Willis defends letting Trump use hit song, 'YMCA' at rallies and events

President-elect Donald Trump is a huge fan of good music and has often played popular newer and older songs at his various MAGA rallies and events.

Sometimes, when he plays certain songs at his events, band members responsible for the tunes express their anger and often pursue legal routes to prevent Trump from playing their songs to appease their anti-Trump fans and record labels.

According to Breitbart, that's definitely not the case with one of the singers behind the hit classic, "Y.M.C.A" by The Village People, with singer Victor Willis applauding Trump for choosing to play his song.

In a social media post, Willis also denied claims that the hit song is some type of "gay anthem."

Willis said that for years, he's received thousands of complaints regarding the playing of his song at Trump rallies and events, but obviously he didn't buckle to the pressure like many singers and bands typically do.

He only asked Trump to stop playing the song at one point because the hordes of complaints became a "nuisance."

However, Willis also applauded the president-elect for choosing his song again and again, as it has often climbed -- sometimes significantly -- on the music billboard charts.

He also denied that the song was tied to the gay community or was any kind of "gay anthem."

Breitbart noted:

Willis highlighted the good things that have come from Trump’s usage of the song, such as the song reaching the number one spot on the Billboard chart. The singer added that while there was “a lot of talk” about the song being a “gay anthem” this was “a false assumption based on the fact that” his writing partner had been gay.

The singer also revealed some legal news behind a dispute regarding the song.

"To Village People fans and the media,” Willis wrote in the Facebook post. "I am the singer and writer of the lyrics to the hit Y.M.C.A. In fact, as was adjudicated and ruled in a U.S. District Court, I wrote 100% of the lyrics, and my writing partner, Jacque Morali wrote the music."

He continued, "Since 2020, I’ve received over a thousand complaints about President Elect Trump’s use of Y.M.C.A. With that many complaints, I decided to ask the President Elect to stop using Y.M.C.A. because his use had become a nuisance to me,” Willis wrote.

“However, the use continued because the Trump campaign knew they had obtained a political use license from BMI and absent that license being terminated, they had every right to continue using Y.M.C.A. And they did."
