Vance: 'Garbage' likely far from the worst descriptor used by Dems to describe conservatives
President Joe Biden has long had a reputation as something of a human gaffe machine, but in one of his most recent slip-ups, he spilled a secret that his party's presidential nominee would probably have kept to himself – at least for now.
By referencing supporters of former President Donald Trump as “garbage,” Biden revealed what Sen. J.D. Vance says is probably the tip of the iceberg in terms of the contempt that he -- and Kamala Harris -- actually harbor toward conservative voters, as Breitbart reports.
Firestorm erupts
The controversial remark to which Vance referred during a recent interview with Breitbart News Saturday came last week when, during a Zoom fundraising call, Biden let loose with what he really thinks of Americans who support Trump.
Biden was in the midst of a rant about remarks made by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe at a Trump rally, in which the jokester said that Puerto Rico was a “floating island of garbage,” as the New York Post reported.
Reacting to Hinchcliffe, Biden told those on the call, “Donald Trump has no character. He doesn't give a damn about the Latino community. Just the other day, a speaker at his rally called Puerto Rico a floating island of garbage.”
Biden went on, “The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters. His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable, and it's un-American.”
Not surprisingly, Biden's comment was greeted by a strong backlash from conservatives everywhere, who deemed his condemnation of roughly half the country's citizens as utterly unbecoming of the commander in chief.
Vance reacts
Speaking to the controversy over the weekend, Vance said that the president's statement was “disgusting.”
Vance went on, “And it's not just that he is Kamala Harris' boss. It's that it was during a Kamala Harris campaign event that he made these remarks.”
The GOP vice-presidential hopeful went on, “It echoes what Tim Walz has said, calling everybody who supports Donald Trump a fascist, accusing the Madison Square Garden rally attendees of being Nazis.”
“They have run a campaign unlike anything that we've ever seen. They were attacking their fellow Americans for disagreeing with Kamala Harris's policies,” Vance said.
Defending the right of Americans to disagree on policies and politicians, Vance added, “If you're struggling with groceries, you're not garbage. If you're pissed off at the Kamala Harris open border, you're not garbage,” and he further posited that American should consider that if this is how Biden and Harris characterize Trump supporters in public, they should just imagine what they say in private.
Fallout continues
Political pundits have suggested that Biden's comment did some real damage to Harris' electoral prospects, and that may be contributing to her decision to decline joint appearances with the president until the election is over.
Adding to the Democrats' problems is the fact that the House Oversight Committee is seeking to compel the White House to release accurate transcripts of what Biden said amid claims that administration staffers strong-armed stenographers to alter their work to change the meaning of the controversial remark, but whether that will ultimately bear fruit, only time will tell.
