Ukrainian official stole $40M meant for weapons purchase

 January 30, 2024

A Ukrainian arms firm conspired with Ukrainian defense ministry officials to steal $40 million earmarked to buy 100,000 mortar shells in order to bolster the fight against Russia as the war drags on into its third year.

This report confirms that Republicans who have been sounding the alarm over corruption in Ukraine were right the whole time.

The United States is sending billions to Ukraine with no oversight or controls, and now the inevitable has happened. Devious entities have taken advantage of that laxity, and for anyone paying attention, this outcome was no surprise.

So far, five people have been charged and are facing over a decade in prison for their crimes.

The question is how many other thefts have gone unnoticed. Where there is one theft caught, there are undoubtedly more that have gone undetected.

Investigators have determined that the money was sent to accounts in Ukraine and the Balkans. Ukraine and corruption are practically synonymous, and it is time that Congress requires serious audits of the money that has already been sent to there.
