The Russian invasion of Ukraine has taken a turn in recent days as the Ukrainians push forward with a counteroffensive strike.
According to The New York Post, Ukrainian forces recently smashed through Russia's first -- and reportedly strongest -- line of defense as Ukraine targets military units aimed at providing cover and shelter for fleeing soldiers.
Thanks to a report from Brig. Gen. Oleksandr Tarnavskiy, it's estimated that Russia's first line of defense has undoubtedly been breached, and Ukraine forces are current between the first and second lines.
The Post noted:
Tarnavskyi estimated that Russia spent about 60% of its time and resources building the initial line of defense, while committing about 20% each to its second and third lines.
He also stated that Russia didn't devote nearly as much to its second and third lines of defense because they never expected Ukraine to make it that far.

"We are now between the first and second defensive lines," the Ukrainian general said.
He added, "In the center of the offensive, we are now completing the destruction of enemy units that provide cover for the retreat of Russian troops behind their second defensive line."
Tarnavskyi seemed confident in his army's push through the Russian defenses, noting that most of Russia's best soldiers would be dead or out of the battle, giving Ukrainian forces an even stronger ability to continue its counteroffensive.
"The enemy is pulling up reserves, not only from Ukraine but also from Russia," Tarnavskiy said. "But sooner or later, the Russians will run out of all the best soldiers. This will give us an impetus to attack more and faster. Everything is ahead of us."

Ukraine's counteroffensive push was notable enough to grab the attention of U.S. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby, who said "some notable progress" had been made in the past 72 hours.
Of course, none of that progress would be possible without a steady flow of mountains of military aide and money from the United States, which has become a hot-button issue in the 2024 election season.
Only time will tell if Ukraine manages to push Russian forces even further.
