Ukraine has a month to make counteroffensive successful, Milley says

September 12, 2023

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley said Sunday that Ukraine only has about 30 days to make gains in its counteroffensive before the roads in the area freeze up and become much harder to navigate.

Milley acknowledged that the offensive was proceeding slower than everyone had hoped but thought there was still time to achieve objectives.

“There’s still a reasonable amount of time, probably about 30 to 45 days’ worth of fighting weather left, so the Ukrainians aren’t done. There’s battles not done… they haven’t finished the fighting part of what they’re trying to accomplish,” he told the BBC.

Milley was not willing to say that the offensive has been a failure despite a lack of progress.

“I said at the very beginning of this [war] that this was going to be long, slow, hard, and high-casualty-producing, and that’s exactly what it is,” he said.

The head of military intelligence for Ukraine, Lt Gen Kyrylo Budanov, vowed that “the fighting will continue one way or another,” even if they had to walk on foot instead of drive tanks.
