Trump-Vance campaign targets of Chinese hack of US telecommunications infrastructure

Another election is near, which undoubtedly brings the inevitable reports of foreign actors conducting hacking operations against the U.S. government.

According to the Washington Examiner, the FBI caught Chinese hackers infiltrating a commercial telecommunications network with a possible target of both presidential campaigns.

The FBI and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency announced the electronic intrusion on Friday.

The federal law enforcement agencies said they were able to identify a "specific malicious activity targeting the sector," followed by CISA writing in a statement that the hack "affected companies, rendered technical assistance, and rapidly shared information to assist other potential victims."

The New York Times revealed Friday that two of the known targets of the hack included vice presidential candidate J.D. Vance and former President Donald Trump.

The Trump-Vance campaign had just announced that it was a target of a hack through Verizon's telecommunications network.

In a report from the Wall Street Journal, people "affiliated" with Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign were also reportedly hacked.

Steven Cheung, Trump’s campaign communications director, released a statement to the Examiner.

"This is the continuation of election interference by Kamala Harris and Democrats who will stop at nothing, including emboldening China and Iran, attacking critical American infrastructure to prevent President Trump from returning to the White House. Their dangerous and violent rhetoric has given permission to those who wish to harm President Trump," the statement read.

He blamed Biden-Harris for emboldening foreign adversaries like China.

"They have now stood by and allowed major foreign adversaries to attack us in order to illegally help Kamala because they know she represents a weak American who will always bow down,” he added.

“Whereas, President Trump will actually stand up against our enemies and defend the United States from any and all aggression.”

Only time will tell if sensitive materials were compromised and, if so, how and when they'll be leaked to the press.
