Trump shows biggest lead so far against DeSantis in new poll

Former President Donald Trump had the largest lead so far against his main rival, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in the latest Morning Consult poll released Tuesday.

A full 60% of Republican voters said they support Trump for the GOP nomination, while only 19% supported DeSantis, who has not yet declared his official candidacy.

Other declared candidates including Nikki Haley and Vivek Ramaswamy didn't even make double digits in the poll.

The poll may represent a peak for Trump, however, if a New York jury's declaration that he sexually abused and defamed a woman has any negative impact on him.

The allegations, which he continues to deny, are not new, and may already be baked into public perceptions of him.

Then again, voters may decide to opt for a candidate with a much cleaner slate and no (known) baggage, like DeSantis, when he actually declares that he's running.
