Trump says he will return America's tallest mountain to previous name
President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to return the tallest mountain in America to its previous name, even against the will of the local townspeople.
Nine years ago, then-President Barack Obama renamed Mount McKinley with the name Denali to honor a local native American community.
The community favored the change at the time, but Trump plans to revert to the previous name, first used in 1917 to honor the 25th president of the United States William McKinley, who was assassinated in 1901.
The 20,000-foot peak sits in Denali National Park and Preserve.
“They took his name off Mount McKinley,” Trump told supporters in Phoenix Sunday.
“He was a great president,” Trump said of McKinley. “That’s one of the reasons that we’re going to bring back the name of Mount McKinley because I think he deserves it.”
