Trump plans to axe temporary protected status for migrants as Dems push Biden to extend it
President-elect Donald Trump and President Joe Biden are at odds over an immigration program known as Temporary Protected Status (TPS) that has allowed hundreds of thousands of migrants from certain countries like Haiti and Venezuela to remain in the U.S. after entering illegally.
Trump has said he would severely limit or get rid of the program, which has existed since the 1990s, while Democrats are urging Biden to take steps that would preserve it.
Republicans have claimed that the program is being abused and isn't really "temporary," while Democrats just want to see as many illegal immigrants in the country as possible so they can push for amnesty and make them voters.
Biden can surely make moves to extend TPS, but he has not done so to this point.
Even if he does reauthorize certain countries or make other moves, Trump can undo them when he takes office in less than three weeks.
Congress is already making moves to limit and restrict TPS, in any case, which could prevent situations like the 30,000 Haitians who crossed the border in a short period of time last year and invaded areas like Springfield, Ohio in massive numbers.
