Trump holding large lead over potential primary challengers, small lead over Biden

January 25, 2023

A new Emerson College poll showed that former President Donald Trump continues to have a commanding lead over potential primary challengers in a hypothetical 2024 presidential matchup and would also beat President Joe Biden if the election were held today.

In a survey of registered voters, 44% said they would vote for Trump, while only 41% would vote for Biden.

This is a change from the same poll in November, which had Biden at 44% and Trump at 41%.

Looking just at GOP voters, 55% supported Trump as the nominee, while his next closest challenger is Florida Governor Ron DeSantis at 29%.

In a hypothetical matchup between Biden and DeSantis among voters of both parties, Biden held only a 1% lead over DeSantis, 40% to 39%.

Both the Biden-Trump and Biden-DeSantis matchups are within the poll's margin of error, which was 3%.
