Top House Republican on DHS committee says 'tides are changing' after border numbers released

January 22, 2023

The chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee reacted to the Biden administration's after-dark release of December's illegal border crossing numbers, which showed 251,487 border crossings during the month -- another new high.

"Another month and another effort from DHS to hinder transparency with the American people. It’s no surprise we get our most important information from DHS on a Friday after dark," Rep. Mark Green (R-TN) said. "The Southwest border is an unmitigated disaster and these monthly encounter numbers from DHS prove just that."

"The Biden administration continues to break its own records every month. Never before in DHS history has there been a month with encounters this high," he added. "It’s no coincidence that all of these dangerous records are happening on Biden’s watch."

But Green promised changes with the GOP in charge of the House.

"However, the tides are changing," he said. "This Committee will no longer tolerate receiving these critical updates 20 days into the month and we will no longer tolerate this refusal to enforce law and order at the border."

He said he plans to have DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas testify before the committee about conditions on the border and why there are so many border crossings every month.
