Tim Walz subpoenaed in nonprofit COVID scheme investigation
The House Education and Workforce Committee has issued subpoenas to Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, who is also the Democrat vice presidential candidate, along with the the Minnesota Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The committee wants to know what part Walz and the agencies had in a nonprofit COVID scheme that may have been the largest COVID fraud in the country.
The nonprofit, Feeding Our Future, claimed it was feeding kids while they were out of school and not getting free and subsidized lunches, but is alleged to have misused millions of government dollars.
Specifically, the committee wants Walz to show "the extent of your responsibilities and actions addressing the massive fraud that resulted in the abuse of taxpayer dollars intended for hungry children."
A spokesperson for Walz said the fraud was "an appalling abuse of a federal COVID-era program," and added, “The state department of education worked diligently to stop the fraud and we’re grateful to the FBI for working with the department of education to arrest and charge the individuals involved.”
A June state audit suggested that state oversight was lacking, and Walz admitted at a June press conference that officials "didn’t do as much due diligence as they should have.”
