South Carolina Senator Tim Scott has a message for the Republican governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis:
There's "no silver lining in slavery."
I'm not 100% sure that DeSantis actually said that there was, or suggested anything close to it, really. Ron's a smart man. He knows that preaching the advantages of slavery in 2023 would literally ruin his life.
There is some confusion, though, as to exactly what Scott is referencing.
One of the Black scholars who worked to build the curriculum encompassing the claim at issue indicated after Kamala Harris called the notion racist that our former VP had actually been quite a bit off on her assessment.
I think it's pretty clear that any student leaving a class using the curriculum would have a pretty negative perception of slavery. Still though, Scott and others don't appreciate that the slaves apparently learned and "developed skills" that they could then turn into a means to earn a living.
