Tim Scott plans to announce 2024 presidential run on May 22

April 30, 2023

Sources close to Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) said that he plans to launch his 2024 presidential campaign on May 22 after the senator teased a "big announcement" on that date in a Twitter post.

Scott, 57, said Sunday, “It is time to take the Faith in America tour not just on the road, not just to an exploratory committee. It is time to make a final step. We are going to have a major announcement. You are going to want to be there.”

It may be difficult for Scott to gain traction in a field where former President Donald Trump is sucking up so much of the oxygen, and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis makes up a strong second even if he hasn't made his run official yet either.

The former governor of South Carolina, Nikki Haley, is also in the race, but hasn't progressed past single digits so far.

Scott is the only Black Republican in the Senate and would be the first person of color to run on the GOP side.

He has an impressive personal history of growing up poor in a single parent household and overcoming adversity to become successful.
