Thomas Massie says he changed vote on Mike Johnson amid assurances from Trump
Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) revealed that he flipped his vote supporting Speaker Mike Johnson after receiving strong reassurances from Johnson on key issues.
The battle to get Johnson a second term as House speaker was a tough one and until President-elect Donald Trump jumped in to canvas votes for Johnson, it looked like the GOP would have a weeks-long battle on their hands.
Massie was a key holdout against Johnson along with Representatives Keith Self (R-TX) and Ralph Norman (R-SC) citing Johnson's disastrous first term as House speaker.
Johnson repeatedly betrayed Republicans and made backroom deals with Democrats and yet Trump insisted that House Republicans unite behind him in order to ensure the House could get to work as soon as Trump is sworn into office.
Massie told Fox News, "I said, ‘Mike, are you going to give us specific examples of fighting for the things we mentioned? Will you give us your word?' He said, ‘Yes.’ So I said, 'OK, we'll take you at your word.' That's why I changed my vote."
Now Massie and other hardline Republicans are waiting to see how Johnson performs. Will he keep his promises that he made or continue to be the reincarnation of Kevin McCarthy.
