13-year-old charged with murder after stabbing her mother to death

Thirteen-year-old Lataya Powell was arrested and charged with murder after confessing to stabbing her mother to death at their Pennsylvania home. She also stabbed her younger brother multiple times, but he is expected to survive.

Powell is being charged as an adult with homicide, two counts of aggravated assault, and tampering with evidence.

Powell had told police "I killed my mom and she'll never forgive me if she is alive." She also apparently tried to frame the neighbor by throwing the murder weapon on the doorstep of the neighbor's home.

The reason for the murder appears to be over Powell's phone, according to an affidavit given to police when she was in custody.

Powell told the police, "I don't have my phone because my mom took it before our fight... I'm the reason my mom is dead."

This horrific incident is becoming far too common in America and is the result of a collapsing family structure and a society that glorifies violence. Unfortunately, there will be more terrible stories like these before something changes.
